OIL CAPITAL UNDERGROUND: THE GENESIS & EVOLUTION OF PUNK ROCK IN TULSA - LATE 70s TO MID 90s (2018)
This is the kind of shit I love. How much did I know about punk, etc. from Tulsa before I saw this? Next to nothing. I think the only two bands I had heard of here were NOTA and Brother Inferior. This wide time period may not work for bigger cities, but nothing seemed short-changed here (Tulsa locals may have a different opinion.) I was thinking Angry Son (who I love) might have been overlooked, but they were from Oklahoma City, not Tulsa.
Lots of interviews with band members and club owners. Starts with the underground rock of the late 70s, into the new wave and hardcore of the early 80s, then goes into a few different directions for the rest of the 80s. New punk in the early 90s, then the last quarter of the movie was about funk/metal/grunge. Some of the music (especially in the 90s) was absolutely terrible, but it was always interesting.
I like these region specific films (Towncraft / Turn It Around). Recommended.
