HEAVEN ADORES YOU (2014)

I like the fact that the documentary mood really matched the mood of Elliot Smith which matches the mood of Portland. Gloomy grays, rain, forests. Lots of atmospheric shots. A cool and interesting story. I remember at the time his solo stuff started getting popular that there really wasn't anything else like it coming from our scene. It was then pretty shocking to see him end up at the Oscars.

The film was well done. High quality. Everything looked clean. Interviews were all good. I especially enjoyed the Heatmiser drummer. If anything, this film makes me want to pick up some Heatmiser stuff. The whole thing was basically a tragedy. Shy weirdo just wants to write and record quiet songs and randomly gets super huge, which probably worsens his depression. Starts taking drugs, ends up killing himself. We could all see it coming. The movie briefly floats the theory that he was killed, which seems weird and out of place without being explored in more depth.
